The Bulldog is already my favorite character. When it wagged its tail after killing the zombie, looking for praise, I actually laughed out loud. A mechanical dog that acts like a real pet? That’s the kind of small detail that makes a story feel alive.
I started reading this and honestly couldn't put it down. The opening scene with Xu Yuan dropping the cup when she hears about Lu Ling's accident—that hit hard. You can feel her panic and confusion, especially with their complicated history. The way she's stuck in this loveless marriage but still cares enough to react like that? Makes you wonder what kind of hold he has on her. I'm already hooked on figuring out their relationship and why she's so torn.
The narrative voice is very self-aware, which I appreciate. She constantly acknowledges that she's in a cliché time-travel story, but she doesn't let that awareness kill the immersion. She jokes about being a "miss of a prominent family" while eating crappy food, and she mocks the tropes even as she falls for them. That balance of sincerity and humor is hard to pull off, but this writer does it well.
2 The interaction between Yun Yichu and Lai Fu is interesting. Lai Fu is protective of his master, which I admire, but he’s also rude to Chang Ming. That feels realistic. Servants in big households would be suspicious of outsiders. I liked that Yun Yichu didn’t just let it slide; he scolded Lai Fu later. It shows he respects Chang Ming and values his word, even if his family is falling apart.
Okay, the "Mount Unreturn" house at the end is a perfect visual. A crumbling cement house with a vine-covered sign for the "Legend Management Bureau, Underworld Liaison Office." It's the most run-down, forgotten-looking building possible for a supposed government branch. It immediately tells you about the state of this bureau. It's abandoned, underfunded, and clearly something went wrong here. It’s the perfect setting for whatever crazy mystery Cui Jue is setting up. It looks small and unimportant, but it's likely the key to everything.
