I am going to reread the first chapter immediately. The amount of foreshadowing in the first news report is brilliant. "B-rank incident, Flying Zombie." "S-rank, Unmelting Bone." "Sequence Awakening Day." It sets up the entire world crisis in three lines. And it slaps you in the face with the danger. Then it contrasts with the "safe" high school test where a powerful zombie is brought in. The story is a masterclass in "tell the reader the threat, then show them the power." It makes every moment feel tense, even the happy parts. I love it.
The scene where Pang Hong digs the magic core is described as “brutal and violent” but also funny because of his amateur technique. He’s literally climbing onto the monster’s head and sawing with a dagger. It’s not elegant. That rawness makes the world feel dangerous and unglamorous. No easy loot drops—you have to carve it out yourself.
The detail of the Italian handcrafted ebony chair for a six-year-old is such a flex. It shows the Helian family’s wealth and also how seriously they’re taking Niuniu’s arrival. But it’s also a bit ridiculous—a black ebony chair for a toddler? That’s the kind of over-the-top thing you’d see in a rich family drama, and I’m here for it. The contrast between the old mansion siheyuan and the castle is also visually striking.
Bai Nannuan's introduction was a bit annoying. She keeps asking why Leng isn't tired, and when Leng offers her a bun, she refuses because it doesn't look appetizing. I get that she's a rich young miss, but it seemed bratty. However, she might turn out to be a loyal friend later. I'll give her a chance.
The world-building around the Far North and the towns is detailed, but I’m confused about the passage of time. Mo Han is sixteen, but the story starts with him as a youth learning his origins, then jumps to after many years of training? The timeline felt a bit unclear. Also, how old is Feixue? She seems childish but is an ancient elf. These unclear details might get resolved later. I just hope it doesn’t stay vague because time is important for character growth.
