Pang Hong transmigrated into a forest and found himself alone near the corpse of a giant monster. A group of seven people, including a cat girl, had just killed the monster and departed, with the cat girl giving him a short sword called the Pathfinder Master Dagger before leaving. He realized he had truly crossed over and decided to survive. Remembering the cat girl’s mention of a magic core, he climbed onto the monster and used the sharp dagger to dig out a white semi-transparent core the size of an egg. Then he set off along the direction she had pointed. Stopping at a stream to wash, he examined the core and saw something rotating inside. When he held it up and tightened his grip, a cold energy surged into his arm, shattering the core and triggering a system initialization. The system merged with the world, modifying his data. His personal status showed name Pang Feng (Pang Hong), level 1, health 100, magic 100, storage space 30 cubic meters, and experience 0/50. He gained the Farmer skill, which allowed summoning a farmer using 1 wood and 10 magic power for one hour. He also received a novice gift pack leader skill Spoils I, which allowed searching enemy corpses for extra loot at 1 magic cost per use, causing the corpse to disappear. To test the Farmer skill, he placed his hand on a rotten dead tree. A wooden creature assembled itself—a crudely built Rotten Farmer with 30 health, made from logs and sticks with bark, possessing a comical appearance. It could perform simple farm work and had a wooden hoe and axe stored in its back. Pang Hong ordered it to hoe the ground, which it did, then to chop a small tree, but its axe soon shattered. Unsatisfied but accepting, he led the wobbly farmer along the path. On the way, two Jungle Jackal beasts emerged. One lunged at Pang Hong; he sidestepped and stabbed its body, splitting it open with the dagger. The other attacked the wooden farmer, biting through its head and arms, destroying it. Pang Hong killed that jackal with a backstab. Both jackals died, and Pang Hong leveled up. His storage already contained two wolf teeth and a bone spear made from wolf leg bones and teeth, with the effect of causing accelerated bleeding. He used Spoils I on the corpses, obtaining a complete wolf hide and a complete wolf skeleton. The corpses vanished. He continued, following a dirt road with a few commoners, and reached Hot Water Village, a fortified settlement with stone and wood walls, a moat with wooden spikes, abatis, and guards in leather armor carrying spears. He entered without trouble. Inside, the village was built at the foot of a mountain, with additional wooden walls and watchtowers, a stream flowing through, and steam from hot springs giving the village its name. He found the commerce street and entered the Big Green Leaf Item Shop, a stone building with armored guards. A goblin named Willywiz approached and led him to a quiet backyard to examine items for sale.Pang Hong presented the wolf teeth, hide, skeleton, and bone spear. The goblin noted that the wolf skeleton was perfectly stripped and highly valued by death mage apprentices and collectors; he appraised the hide at 8 silver coins, the skeleton at 40 silver coins, and the bone spear at 15 silver coins, totaling 63 silver coins. He explained the local currency: copper coins (small with hole), large copper coins (no hole), silver coins (small with hole), large silver coins (no hole), and gold coins, all in decimal conversion. Pang Hong also asked about the dagger’s value; the goblin said a new one cost 1.5 gold coins, but his used dagger was worth 80 silver coins. Pang Hong chose not to sell it. He received his payment in a mixture of coins and asked for directions to a restaurant. With money in hand, he headed there to eat before making further plans.

Overall, this opening chunk hits a good balance between action, worldbuilding, and humor. The system is quirky, the protagonist is relatable, and the supporting characters like Willywiz have personality. The only complaint is the wooden farmer died too soon—I wanted to see more of its dumb face. But that also makes the world feel harsh. Can’t wait to see what Pang Hong does next in Hot Spring Village.

The transition from the fight to the village feels earned. Pang Hong washes off blood at a stream, follows the road, sees farmland, then the wall. His reaction “almost out of breath from exhaustion” makes me feel his fatigue. When he finally gets inside, the detailed description of the stone slab road and shops grounds the setting. It’s a classic “arrival at safe zone” moment done right.

The village entrance description with the drawbridge, spiked moat, and bloodstained abatis sets a grim tone. It’s clear this world isn’t safe. The fact that the guards don’t stop him implies they’re used to travelers, but the defenses show they expect attacks. That visual contrast makes Hot Spring Village feel both welcoming and dangerous. I want to know more about the threats outside.

Pang Hong’s thought process after getting the system is cute. He immediately tries to summon a farmer with a thin branch, then upgrades to a rotten log. His excitement when it works is palpable, then disappointment when he sees how ugly it is. The line “The things summoned by others after transmigration aren’t this miserable, are they!” sums up his luck perfectly.

The wood farmer’s appearance: “two crooked tree scars and the growth rings formed a pair of foolish eyes, two bumps for ears, a short branch for a nose, a crooked tree hole for a mouth.” The level of detail is ridiculous and I love it. I can picture this goofy log person perfectly. The author definitely put effort into making the summon feel unique rather than generic.

The moment Pang Hong washes the magic core in the stream and sees something rotating inside is creepy. He holds it up to the sun, gets blinded, and crushes it accidentally. That accidental activation feels more organic than a deliberate system binding. The cold sensation then warmth is a nice physical cue for the transformation. It’s a typical “crystal shatters and merges” trope but well executed.
