Gu Yunxi is the comic relief this dark story needed. Her constant misunderstanding of Ji Chuan’s gestures had me snorting. “You mean let me into your mouth, don’t struggle?!” and then “You don’t like me, don’t eat me” — the girl’s a trainwreck and I love her. The dynamic where a zombie is trying to be nice and she thinks he’s fattening her up is peak comedy.
The scene where the mother offers the last two steamed buns to the MC was a knife twist. She thinks he’s hungry, but he pulls out meat buns from his backpack. That contrast between their poverty and his ability to provide is stark. It also showcases the mom’s love. She didn’t care about her own hunger. That level of detail is what makes characters feel real.
Xiao Meng’s internal monologue about the rewards is super relatable. She’s already a Great Grandmaster so a Grandmaster Pill is useless, but she still gets excited about higher-ranked rewards. It shows that no matter how strong you are, there’s always something to chase. Her character, usually so detached, actually feeling anticipation is a nice growth seed.
The interaction (or lack thereof) between Lin Yu and Hongjun is interesting because they never actually speak. They just chase and attack. That makes the conflict feel primal. Hongjun just wants to eat the bead, and Lin Yu just wants to escape. It's pure survival. When Hongjun finally gives up and burrows into the ground, I felt a bit sorry for him. He's a fallen demon god scrabbling for scraps. And Lin Yu just gets luckier. I like that the early conflict is simple but intense.
