The scene where the Black Robe Jailer ignores Su Hong at first because of the "matching outfits" is weirdly funny. The jailer is literally playing jailer dress-up and got annoyed seeing someone else in similar armor. That little detail adds personality to the monsters and makes the world feel more alive.
The system’s reward system adds a nice layer of stakes. Every time Lin Du saves a love-struck person, she gets pills that extend her life. It’s a literal life-or-death motivation, but it also ties into her own past life where she died from stress. There’s a poetic irony there. She was killed by love-struck people, now she has to save them to survive. I’m curious to see how her own feelings evolve toward them.
The side character who got beaten to death for bringing tea at the wrong moment really set the stakes immediately. Like damn this emperor is NOT playing around. But then the MC's reaction was so cold too - she's just like "welp that's my third roommate this month" which shows she's been in survival mode for a while. That contrast between the brutality and her casual acceptance of it really drives home how dangerous this setting is.
20. The "white cat assassin" thing is probably nothing, but I'm suspicious. After the first chapter's violence, I'm paranoid. Maybe it's a spy? Maybe it's a magical creature? The way it disappeared "somewhere" after Yang Nuo threatened it feels like a setup. Could be a chekhov's gun. Or just a cat. Either way, good for keeping me guessing.
