Typically, I refrain from writing reviews for stories that have only a handful of chapters. However, this particular tale has struck a chord with me in a way that I simply cannot resist sharing my thoughts. The narrative presents a delightful slice-of-life experience seen through the eyes of a baby, allowing for a unique perspective that blends innocence with the complexity of human emotions. The author skillfully weaves together moments that resonate on a deeply personal level, revealing the subtleties of growth and discovery in both the child and those around them. Each chapter provides a poignant snapshot of life that captures the essence of what it means to experience the world anew, making it an engaging read that feels both refreshing and relatable. I am genuinely excited about the direction this story is heading. In fact, my anticipation runs so high that I am considering using this work as a tool to enhance my Japanese literacy skills. Currently, my abilities are limited to basic conversational phrases, but I believe that immersing myself in this captivating narrative could significantly boost my understanding of the language. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend diving into this story. Its well-crafted storytelling and emotional depth promise to leave a lasting impression. I can't wait to see how the plot unfolds and what new adventures lie ahead for both the characters and myself as a reader.
The "no talent" reveal was a brutal gut punch. El already knew when he was a baby. The flashback where she looks at baby Lute with a "pitying expression" hits so much harder once you know what that look meant. She already wrote him off before he could even walk.
The Bai family dynamics are so painfully real. Bai Mengxing is exactly the kind of entitled bully you'd expect from a wealthy family, and Bai Mengjin's situation as an orphan being looked down on is classic. What makes it fresh is how she handles it now versus how she did in the past. The novel mentions that her original retaliation was clever but she missed the point that people don't need a reason to hate you. That's such a mature observation, and it makes the fantasy of her getting to do it all over again with her current mindset feel earned.
1 I honestly felt bad for the girls when the director shut them down, like they clearly had good intentions and did the whole research thing finding out about the cat and preparing the cage, but they just didn't check if the cat was actually owned by the school first, that's a rookie mistake.
The pacing in the second chapter dips slightly during the long conversation between Su Li and Chen Jingyao. It's necessary exposition, but it feels a bit info-dump heavy. The details about the father's injustice and the Emperor's betrayal are important, but they could have been woven in more gradually through actions or later dialogue.
The element of the phone screen showing a “black hole” is a great visual. It creates a sense of danger and the unknown. The part where Lin Feng fears his spirit is being sucked in is a nice touch. It gives the power a slightly eldritch, mysterious quality. It’s not just a simple magical gadget; it feels like a living, dangerous portal. The “beep” sounds from the system are also a good choice, letting the reader know that this is a metallic, technological magic system, not fairy-tale magic. The tone is consistent in that regard.
I must say, I've completely fallen in love with this novel! Its charm and originality really stand out, especially after reading so many others that can sometimes feel predictable or repetitive. The characters are written with such depth and nuance; I find myself genuinely invested in their journeys and relationships. However, I do have to mention that the translation quality has been a bit inconsistent, which can sometimes detract from the overall experience. Fortunately, it appears that a dedicated team has recently taken over the translation efforts, and they are committed to releasing the chapters in chronological order. This gives me hope for a smoother reading experience moving forward. Despite my strong urge to dive into the upcoming chapters right away, I've decided to hold off for now and wait patiently. I want to savor the story as it unfolds without rushing through it. Overall, I'm excited about what’s to come and can't wait to see how the plot evolves!
The relationship between Yuan Ziyou and Huo Xifei is already pulling at my heartstrings. His words “if you don’t marry me, I will never marry” from the past, and then his actual actions of never marrying and building her a tomb – that’s the kind of devotion that makes you root for them. Even though she pushes him away in the first life, she clearly still loves him. The fact that he’s the one who brought about the downfall of Huainan Hou actually makes him a tool for her revenge, but also her savior. Complicated.
