Horita Hata, a man killed by his former bully with a kitchen knife, awakens as a baby in a strange world. He lies beside a silver-haired, dog-eared infant in a fluffy bed and realizes he has been reincarnated. A woman with rabbit ears and pink hair, later known as El-sensei, picks him up gently. He sees his reflection as a black-haired baby and accepts his new life.

Raised in an orphanage in the small town of Hoard, he learns the local language over the next year. He deduces that he was abandoned shortly after birth with a handkerchief bearing the name "Lute." He resolves to live differently in this world: to become strong, never run from hardship, and always help those in need as atonement for his past cowardice, which allowed a classmate to be driven to suicide and led to his own murder.

At age three, Lute can walk and talk. He attends El-sensei's classes on reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and general knowledge. He learns that this world was created by a god called Tenjin-sama, but six Demon Lords stole divine law and turned it into magic. Heroes of five races—Human, Fairy, Beastkin, Demon, and Dragonkin—stole magic back and sealed five Demon Lords; the last king still lurks on the Monster Continent. Magic is divided into elemental, non-elemental, healing, and support types, and magicians are ranked from C- up to SSS. Those of B- talent or higher are considered elite.

Lute asks El-sensei about his own magic talent. She hesitantly tells him he has no talent as a magician and his capacity is around C Rank, the second lowest. She advises him to accept reality and choose another path. Lute initially feels disappointment but then hears about magic tools in class, especially Magic Liquid Metal—a substance that can form any weapon when magic power is channeled into it. He envisions creating a handgun, a modern weapon that could give him an edge. To do this, he must learn to control magic power even if he cannot become a full magician.

He begins attending basic magic classes on the sidelines. After observing lessons on Resistance Formation and Body Reinforcement Technique, he attempts to use them himself. During his first try, he successfully creates a shining rhombus of resistance magic, but he loses all magical power in an instant, faints, and soils himself. El-sensei rushes to help. Later, he tries Body Reinforcement, successfully enhancing his jump, but again exhausts his magic power, falls backward, hits his head on a stone, bleeds profusely, loses bladder control, and chokes on vomit. El-sensei intervenes to save his life and then scolds him angrily. She bans him from further participation in magic classes due to the dangers and disruptions.

Despite these setbacks, Lute does not give up his goal. He still believes that mastering magic power is essential for using Magic Liquid Metal to create a handgun. His determination remains strong even as he is forced to step back from direct training. He knows he must find another way to become powerful enough to protect others and atone for his past sins.

So far, this story has proven to be an excellent tale centered around the theme of reincarnation, featuring a protagonist who harbors an unabashed passion for weapons—specifically firearms. At first glance, it may seem a little unconventional, but the narrative embraces this enthusiasm in a way that adds depth and intrigue to the protagonist's journey. I have noticed that some readers express dissatisfaction regarding the various hardships faced by the main character. However, I believe these challenging situations are not only plausible but also essential for paving the way for crucial encounters in the future. It’s this element of struggle that makes the character's growth feel authentic and relatable. That being said, my only critique would be instances where the protagonist seems to be handed the "idiot ball," acting in ways that feel contrived or out of character for the sake of plot progression. It can be frustrating when the story demands that the character make unrealistic decisions just to facilitate certain developments. Nonetheless, despite these minor hiccups, the overall experience has been quite enjoyable. The story unfolds with an array of interesting and diverse characters, each contributing to a complex and engaging world. Their interactions and relationships add a rich layer to the narrative, enhancing the protagonist's journey and keeping readers invested in the outcome. On the whole, this is a solid reincarnation story that successfully combines action, character development, and adventure. I look forward to seeing how the plot evolves as the protagonist continues to navigate the challenges ahead!

In this captivating tale, we follow the journey of a former victim of bullying who, after facing a bitter defeat at the hands of his past tormentor, finds himself resurrected in a fantastical world teeming with beastmen and magical wonders. However, the twist of fate is harsh: in this new realm dominated by magic, possessing low magical talent renders one practically worthless. Our protagonist, who seems destined for greatness, quickly realizes that he falls squarely into the "trash" category due to his lack of magical prowess. Despite these disheartening circumstances, serendipity strikes when he discovers the existence of Metal Slimes, a nod to the beloved Dragon Quest series. These extraordinary creatures produce a rare metal liquid that can be shaped into various forms based on the user's mental image. This revelation is a game-changer for our protagonist. An extreme gun enthusiast—or otaku, as they say—he possesses an in-depth understanding of firearms, a unique skill set that puts him at the forefront of innovation in a world where magic reigns supreme. Thus, empowered by his newfound knowledge, he embarks on a groundbreaking journey to become the first gunsmith and gunfighter in this magic-fueled society. The juxtaposition of firearms and magic leads to exhilarating possibilities, creating a unique blend of technology and sorcery that challenges the very fabric of this fantastical world. As his journey unfolds, readers are treated to an engaging exploration of ingenuity, resilience, and the struggle against the odds, making for a riveting narrative that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve noticed that quite a few readers tend to give up on this series far too early, and I can completely understand why. At first glance, the plot takes a rather unusual and almost unsettling twist when the main character finds himself in a position as a slave. This initial development might raise some eyebrows, especially with the looming threat of a potential NTR (Netorare) scenario that could leave many fans feeling uneasy or disheartened. However, I urge those who feel disheartened by this plot direction to reconsider. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that not all is as it initially seems. The character's master, rather than embodying the cruel archetype one might expect, turns out to be a surprisingly benevolent figure. In fact, they go above and beyond, investing time and effort into training the protagonist, leading to profound character growth and development. If you're among those readers who closed the book on this series at the mere mention of the MC becoming a slave, I strongly encourage you to push through that initial discomfort. The narrative deepens and evolves in ways that are both unexpected and rewarding. Trust me, the journey becomes far more intricate and engaging as it progresses; it's a story worth experiencing in its entirety. You might just be pleasantly surprised by how the characters and plotlines develop, leading to a richer narrative than you initially anticipated.

Well then, let’s delve into this discussion! It's clear that the divide in ratings for this novel evokes some strong reactions. Those who have rated it one to two stars seem to have taken particular issue with a major turning point in the story, which they found unsatisfactory. It’s not uncommon for readers to have differing tastes, and this particular shift in the narrative seems to have struck a nerve. Perhaps the character's decisions or the direction of the plot felt out of sync with their expectations, leading to their frustration. However, it's essential to remember that storytelling is inherently subjective. What resonates deeply with one reader might completely alienate another. The beauty of literature, especially in genres like this one, lies in its ability to stir varying emotions and provoke thought. As such, while some individuals may find themselves "butthurt" over a specific plot development, others may appreciate it as a bold narrative choice, one that adds depth and complexity to the character arcs. As we explore further, it’s interesting to note that this novel has garnered a mix of opinions, highlighting not only the polarized nature of reader responses but also the diverse tastes within the literary community. So, let’s keep an open mind and appreciate the differing perspectives as we continue to discuss this novel's strengths and weaknesses.

I feel it is essential to address some significant misinterpretations in other reviews regarding the narrative direction of this story. It appears that many readers are hesitant to delve into specifics, so allow me to clarify. Chapter 19 seems to be the one that causes the most confusion among readers. In the grand scheme of the series, which spans over 100 chapters, this particular chapter comprises merely one or two pages, making its word count incredibly low. It's important to recognize that it is not an 'arc' in any traditional sense, but rather a brief segment that contributes to character development and plot progression. Mild spoilers ahead. As is common with many other-world fantasy stories, this narrative incorporates the harem genre. The part that seems to have incited so much outrage can be found in chapter 11 of the manga. Here, we are introduced to Snow, the main character’s fiancée, and it's vital to note that he remains loyal to her throughout his adventures. Any criticisms regarding themes of NTR (Netorare) reflect a misunderstanding of what NTR actually entails, as the narrative does not engage with that trope at all. Following Snow, the main character embarks on a quest to become a formidable adventurer. However, his journey begins with some misfortune; he is tricked by his first party, robbed, and ultimately sold into a form of slavery (which, amusingly enough, results in a comical situation despite the harshness of his treatment). The family that purchases him has a daughter—remember the harem element? This second girl is portrayed as incredibly cute, inspiring a protective instinct in the protagonist akin to that of an older brother. Their dynamic is further enriched as she affectionately refers to him as ‘big brother’ and later, in a sweet moment, calls Snow ‘big sister’, suggesting a bond forged in shared experiences and implied agreements pertaining to their growing relationships. The second girl, a reclusive vampire who is generally apprehensive around men, has been pushed by her overbearing father to make the protagonist dress as a girl to mitigate the shock of her birthday party, which turns out to be a rather innocent introduction to companionship—complete with the added intrigue of occasional blood-draining, given the vampire’s unique needs. Over time, Snow grows to become good friends with the vampire girl, and she seemingly encourages the notion of stepping into the role of the second wife, while the main character exhibits reluctance in embracing this scenario, which, again, does not qualify as NTR. In conclusion, while reviewers are entitled to their opinions, I felt an obligation to address these misconceptions directly. Whether you love or loathe the story, it's important to approach it with a nuanced understanding. Discrepancies in interpretations can lead to misinformation and, quite frankly, I’ll have no tolerance for those misrepresenting the narrative. So, with that said, let’s all strive for a more informed dialogue moving forward.

Firstly, before I delve into my criticisms of "Gun-Ota," I feel it’s important to clarify that the story itself isn’t fundamentally awful. In fact, it initially held significant potential to develop into a captivating web novel. However, my reading experience ultimately felt squandered due to the author’s bewildering decision to introduce a jarring plot twist that undermined the narrative’s coherence. From the beginning, "Gun-Ota" evokes a sense of familiarity reminiscent of "Mushoku Tensei." The protagonist is an adult man reincarnated into the body of a young boy, who navigates his childhood alongside a close friend whom he affectionately treats like a younger sister. This dynamic is engaging and lends itself to rich storytelling opportunities. Yet, much like in "Mushoku Tensei," a pivotal event occurs around chapter 20 that alters the protagonist’s life trajectory—but here lies the crux of my disappointment. Unlike the smooth narrative evolution seen in "Mushoku Tensei," the author of "Gun-Ota" mishandles this transformative arc, leading me to abandon the novel at that point. Although I recently returned to it out of sheer boredom, the impact of that poorly executed shift irrevocably dampened my enjoyment. The introduction of a dark undercurrent felt not only unexpected but also wholly unnecessary. For several volumes, I followed along as our main character was led around with little direction, creating a frustrating and disjointed reading experience. It seems that for some readers, this sudden tonal shift may not pose an issue. However, for me, it felt completely out of place and disrupted the established mood of the story. To be more specific, it's not that "Gun-Ota" is inherently a dark novel; rather, it’s the scattered dark elements that seem to crop up arbitrarily throughout the narrative. The key issue I have is not solely with these darker moments themselves but with their abrupt appearance and the manner in which they disrupt the overall flow of the story. In retrospect, I must admit I have officially given up on this novel. It became increasingly clear to me that it does not improve, at least in my opinion. Despite the glimmers of creative potential I initially perceived, the direction the story ultimately took left me disheartened.
