I was totally hooked from the very first scene at the manor entrance. The way Tian Ning just sits there reading her storybook while everyone else is waiting for the drama to unfold is such a mood. I love that she doesn't care about the family's cold welcome at all, she's got better things to do like finishing her book! That's a protagonist I can get behind.
The physical description of Su Chen's birthmark removal is symbolic: "the dragon-shaped birthmark... peeled off, transformed into a golden light, merged into his brow." That's a nice metaphor for shedding his old identity and embracing his new power. It also literally makes him handsome, which is a bit on the nose (looks match strength), but it's satisfying for the self-insert aspect. I'm glad he's no longer the ugly monster the Han sisters mocked. That revenge element is complete.
2 I need to talk about the visual description of the cat, "round fluffy big round face" and "perfect oval cheeks" and "white gloves," it's painted so vividly that I can literally picture this chubby tabby with black dots on his ears looking like a mini lynx, the author definitely knows cats.
The part where the Green Lotus absorbs black qi from the White Tiger spiritual body and gets full was oddly satisfying. Like a vacuum cleaner for bad vibes. It made me smile.
The novel embarked on an intriguing journey right from the start, particularly through the lens of its captivating heroine. She struck me as a strong, no-nonsense character, exuding a cool, almost "Matrix"-esque vibe that immediately pulled me in. There’s something magnetic about a character who embodies both strength and confidence, and this heroine certainly fit the bill. I found myself rooting for her with enthusiasm, fully engaged in her quest as she appeared to be the quintessential badass—ready to take on the world with fierce determination. However, as the narrative unfolded, I couldn't help but notice a dip in momentum. What started as a gripping story filled with promise began to lose its spark, making it harder for me to stay invested. There were points in the plot where the pacing felt sluggish, leaving me yearning for the intensity that initially drew me in. It was a bit disappointing to see such potential not entirely realized as the chapters progressed. Now, let's delve into some major spoilers...
The humor in this story is well-placed, the forum comments like “Get lost, grandpa” and “I won!” made me laugh. Bai Yi’s reaction to seeing others’ bad luck, describing it as “joyful” and “funny,” shows his personality isn’t all grim. The wishing well comments with people cursing and celebrating are entertaining, and the “Long live Human” chant starting ironically but becoming serious is amusing. This humor balances the dark survival aspects perfectly, it keeps the mood from getting too depressive.
