I really thought the game would turn into a normal war shooter when Eagle Eye started demanding a gun. The moment he said “give me a weapon” I expected the squad leader to hand him a rifle and then the game would become a linear cover shooter. But they kept it pure survival: no guns, no combat, just walking and keeping your body heat. That subversion of expectations was so refreshing. The game commits to its theme of hardship and never gives you a power fantasy out. In an industry full of power trips, this feels like a cold shower.
Huo Tingyan has the most growth potential in this part. In one chapter, he goes from pushing her away to holding her protectively. It’s a small arc but effective for a setup. Su Luo doesn’t change much because she’s already determined. I expect her to become more spoiled as the story goes. The grandparents show their true colors instantly. I’m curious if Huo Tingyan will ever admit she’s his daughter in a biological sense or if it stays ambiguous.
The fight with the masked bandits was intense. A Ying's bravery in standing up to them, and then Aunt Qing's sudden appearance, was a great action beat. But I was a little confused about the logistics—how did Aunt Qing know to come at that exact moment? And why did the bandits target them? The story lets it hang, which works for mystery, but I do hope there's a payoff later. The snowy setting added a cool, cinematic feel to the whole scene.
The Granny Gui character has potential but feels like an info-dump device so far. Her dialogue is a bit stiff, often just giving Lin Xiaoxiao (and the reader) necessary background. I wish she had a bit more personality beyond being loyal and shocked. But the scene where she whispers who Noble Consort Chun is during the formal greeting shows her practical value. The author seems aware that she needs someone to help navigate the world, and Granny Gui fulfils that role adequately. I hope she gets fleshed out later, maybe with her own secrets or humor. The palace maids in pink scurrying out were described well enough to be visual but not memorable. The harem greeting scene, with Lin Xiaoxiao feeling like a national leader reviewing troops, was a fun power fantasy. I enjoyed her delight.
