The story could benefit from showing the mother’s past interactions with her son. How did she raise him alone? What struggles did they face? The current version jumps from “poor student with single mom” to “mom is uber-rich boss.” There’s no transition. A few earlier chapters showing their normal life would make the contrast stronger.
I really like the small touches of historical realism, like the mention of famine, the simple dowry system, and the hierarchical family structure. The second branch, the first branch, the grandparents—all living under one roof, with clear pecking orders. The way the grandmother makes financial decisions based on favoritism feels authentic to many traditional families. It's not overly explained, but you pick it up through actions and dialogue. The author trusts the reader to understand without long info dumps, which I appreciate.
The humor in this is dark but appropriate. "Sanhe Dashen" comparison made me laugh, and the bathroom situation description was both horrifying and comedic. That bit about people getting stabbed from below through the toilet chute? Absolutely insane but probably accurate for medieval warfare. The author walks a good line between grim and funny.
chen yi's line about how he wouldn't be like his seniors saving their ultimate move for last – that's clearly a joke about ultraman always waiting until the last second to use the specium ray. it's a nice meta nod that shows chen yi is self-aware about being in a story where similar tropes exist. it also makes his quick and brutal takedown feel justified. no time for monologuing
Qi Shuo's behavior is intriguingly contradictory. He saved her from falling, made up a story to protect her, and earlier in the original timeline he supposedly ignored her. Why the change? Is it because he also remembers? Or was his earlier indifference a facade in the original timeline, and now he has reasons to act differently? Those "beautiful eyes" on the masked rescuer at the beginning might be his, which would mean he sacrificed himself for her before. That's a major clue.
The gravity magic Phia uses to lessen her weight on Bal when she lies on him is a clever detail. Shows she's considerate even while pretending to be demanding. These little character touches make her more endearing than your standard tsundere
The female characters are decently distinguished for a short intro. Ouyang is the responsible leader, Qing Luan the tough fighter, Mu Wanqing the talkative one, Yun Minting the energetic little girl, Xiong Shanshan the strong silent type, etc. They each have unique reactions to Ji Yu. They’re not just background props, which I appreciate.
