I'd like to know more about the original owner of the body. The memories are fragmented, but we know he was abused and on the run. The fact that he was in the monastery suggests he might have been hiding there. The sword might have been his. The red-robed woman wants him back. So the original guy was important enough to hunt personally. The transmigrated MC now has to deal with his predecessor's enemies. That's a classic setup but done well here.
That moment where Zhijun helps her button her clothes back up is so strange, pathetic, and oddly tender. “His movements were clumsy and stiff; it took him half an hour to fasten three buttons.” It shows he isn’t a hardened predator. He is a clumsy, lovesick man who did something terrible and immediately panicked. It doesn’t excuse it, but it makes the character feel complex rather than cartoonish.
"Grumble..." as the opening line is perfect. It immediately sets the physical state of the protagonist. Starting with a basic, relatable human need (hunger) is a smart way to hook a reader before introducing any of the fantasy elements.
The scene where Mother Ning orders Xiang Tao to take back the jewelry is cathartic. It's a direct reversal of the family's usual power dynamics. Reading "bring them all back" felt like a small victory after pages of built-up frustration.
1 The dynamic with the Shi family parents is heartbreaking but realistic. They’re clearly in turmoil. They just found out their “son” isn’t theirs. The mother’s cautious question about him going to the Capital City feels so sad. She’s probably terrified he’ll leave forever. But at the same time, I know from the protagonist’s memories that they eventually side with Zhou Su. So this moment of tenderness is laced with irony. It hurts to read.
The Iron Horse Seven Thieves introduction was cinematic – dusty horses, loud threats, and a quick kill to show they mean business. I liked that they have a personal grudge against Chu Fan for killing their seventh brother. It's not random banditry; there's a history. The leader's internal energy locking Chu Fan in place created real tension.
The rebirth being shared between the two sisters is a fantastic twist. It's not just Shen Sangning who has future knowledge, Shen Miaoyi also knows what's coming. That creates a much more complex power struggle. They're both playing with information from the future, but they have different priorities and different levels of intelligence. Very compelling setup.
The story's love of detail, like Yan Zhizhi's hidden folding stool and salted egg glasses, makes it fun. These small props are used for jokes and feel integral to her character. They show her preparedness and sense of humor. It's these quirks that make her memorable.
