Yu Molan locking the door and turning the deadbolt feels like a ritual of finality. The boning knife wrapped in a towel on the coffee table. Him stopping midway and asking himself "what am I doing?" that moment of hesitation where he still believes civilization might recover. That's the saddest part. He's preparing for the worst while clinging to the hope that this is temporary. But the scream from downstairs and the muffled thud of something hitting a security door tells us everything we need to know.
1. The story itself has a delightful charm to it, capturing my interest from the very beginning. I’ve found myself growing particularly fond of all the characters, especially Liz, who exudes an irresistible cuteness. 2. Initially, I hesitated to dive into this novel after reading the mixed reviews. However, now that I've progressed further into the story, I must say that I am completely captivated. Liz's adorable personality stands out, and Al is the yandere character I had hoped he would be, adding a thrilling edge to the plot. The dynamic between Chloe and Liz is also fascinating, bringing additional depth to the narrative. 3. One aspect I appreciate is Liz's character development, which feels remarkably genuine. She manages to retain her sense of self throughout her journey of acceptance and growth, showcasing her determination to improve herself. Meanwhile, Al's presence in the initial parts of the story feels somewhat understated, highlighting Liz's focus on her own learning and self-education. 4. The overall tone of the story is delightfully fluffy, which provides a nice contrast to some of the more frustrating elements, such as Will’s character, who tends to be rather annoying at times. Unfortunately, he often becomes a driving force in moving the plot forward, which can detract from the overall enjoyment of the narrative. 5. I urge readers not to let initial reviews deter them from exploring this story. Give the first ten chapters a try; if it doesn't resonate with you, that's perfectly fine! Personally, I found immense joy in reading this novel, and I absolutely adore the cute illustrations that accompany the text. I highly recommend that everyone give it a chance, as there’s a lot to appreciate. That wraps up my thoughts!
The character of the grandfather, Old Master Feng, is a bit flat so far. He's just the wise elder who mediates, but he hasn't shown much depth. His reaction is "wait and see," which is cautious but not exciting. I hope he gets more development later, especially since he's the one with authority. Right now, he feels like a placeholder for the family's honor. The mention of his Tang suit is a nice visual detail, but I need more from him to care.
The worldbuilding hint about the Outer Realm Battlefield and the gods and demons is intriguing. Eight million cultivators died, nineteen ancestors perished, and only Lu Ye came back. That’s a lot of mystery. What exactly happened there? And what’s with the “Nine Hells Sword Diagram” in his palm? Good setup for future arcs.
The scene where the MC is given food boxes by the authorities is amusing. He keeps eating and thanking them while everyone is awkward. It makes a good contrast with his deadly seriousness during ghost fights. The author balances these tones well.
The pacing of the test sequences is excellent. Each test has a different rhythm: the first one is quick questions, the second is a tense survival scenario, the third is a psychological test with the token. The time limit (ten minutes for the simulation) creates urgency, but the story doesn't rush through the action. Moments like Su Ninglong checking her watch or slow-walking through the banquet hall stretch time effectively. The tension builds organically. The final reveal of the black shadow is perfectly timed – just as we think the test is over, there's one more challenge.
I would rate this story somewhere between 2 to 2.5 out of 5 stars overall, but unfortunately, I’m not sure how to adjust the star rating, so I apologize for that! T^T At first, I found the narrative to be quite captivating and held high expectations for its development. The premise showcases a unique plot that certainly piqued my interest, and I must commend the translator for their excellent work in bringing the story to life in English. However, I encountered several issues that ultimately made it challenging for me to continue reading. Please keep in mind that these opinions are subjective; what didn't resonate with me might very well appeal to someone else. That said, binge-reading this story may have contributed to my growing frustration, so if you're considering diving into it, I would highly recommend taking breaks after every few chapters to fully digest the content. One aspect I genuinely appreciated was the protagonist herself. Her character growth is commendable, and I found myself rooting for her throughout the journey. Additionally, her servant added a layer of charm that enhanced my reading experience. However, I must express my strong dislike for the princes portrayed in the story. The second prince, in particular, felt more like a plot device than an actual character; his delusional tendencies became annoying rather quickly. It would have been more palatable if he weren't a prince who garnered respect from others, as it magnified the absurdity of his behavior. As for the male lead, he proved to be equally vexing. The overwhelming majority of his dialogue throughout the first 55 chapters revolved around calling her "cute wife." This repetitive phrase felt insincere and, at times, hypocritical. Moreover, he seemed to meddle excessively in her affairs, which detracted from her personal growth. I found it disheartening that her self-improvement was often overshadowed by his presence, making it feel less like a genuine evolution and more akin to a pet learning tricks for their owner. Their dynamic came off more as that of a master and a servant rather than equals in a romantic relationship. In summary, while I had high hopes and appreciated certain elements of the story, its execution fell short in several areas, particularly regarding character depth and relationship dynamics. A little more balance between the characters could have significantly enhanced the overall experience for me.
