The attribute system seems simple: Str, Agi, Con, Spi. No complex sub stats. Easy to follow. But the average level 1 professional having stats under 10 while Gu Chen has near 20 after feedback shows a noticeable gap. It’s already starting to feel like a cheat, but in a fun way.
I appreciate that the demon cult members aren't one dimensional. They all have different reactions to the modern stuff – some think the toilet is wasteful, some worry about their rabbits, some focus on fixing swords. The fact that they choose to stay sealed on the mountain because they've been rejected by society everywhere is heartbreaking. They'd rather live in poverty with their cult than face a world that sees them as monsters. It makes Miao Yunyou's role as their bridge to modernity feel important.
I have to say, the translation here feels really natural and flows well. The dialogue, in particular, sounds like how actual people talk. Lines like "What the hell? Is this a ride-sharing service?" and "How could I possibly know the way?" sound exactly like what you’d say if a ghost car showed up. The author does a great job of mixing casual contemporary slang with the more formal, mythological terms. It makes the world feel accessible. I never felt like I was reading something stiff or translated; it all felt like it was originally written in English with this great comedic voice.
I really like how Xu Zhou’s personality comes through in his thoughts. He’s not just a blank slate protagonist. He’s got a sense of humor, like when he thinks about letting his dad know why the flowers are red. That kind of raw, slightly violent humor feels very online gaming culture. It makes him relatable and fun to follow. He’s not overly noble or too cynical, just a regular guy who’s now got a cheat and is determined to use it.
I appreciate that the story shows the downsides of his ability early on. The extraction process for the purple term drained his spiritual energy, and he had to rest. That’s a good limiting factor. Also, when he extracted the “worm-eaten” from his bed board, the bed stopped creaking, but it’s still just a plain board. So it’s not like he’s creating gold from nothing. The ability seems to remove or add abstract qualities, which is incredibly versatile, but it clearly taxes him. That’s the kind of balance I like in a system ability.
The scene with the service staff in the bathroom felt a bit like exposition. They conveniently discuss Xia Xiaonuan and Chu Jin, which gives Wen Tiantian the information she needs. It's a bit on-the-nose, but it moves the plot forward effectively. I would have preferred Wen Tiantian to figure it out more organically, but I don't hate it because it serves a purpose.
