I’m a little disappointed that the little brother’s situation is presented so straightforwardly. I was hoping for a twist—maybe he escaped on his own, or the Hu had another reason to take children. But it’s still early, so I’m waiting to see if there’s more to it than just “kids as loot.”
The emotional journey in the first few chapters — from hopelessness to anger to a desperate fight for survival — is well-paced. I felt his rage when he was attacked for no good reason, and his subsequent resolve to train and get revenge felt earned, not forced.
2 Qin Ge's "study materials" failing him at the critical moment is such a realistic and embarrassing moment. It breaks the typical OP protagonist mold and makes him very human.
Buggy is such a mood in this fic. The way he's grumpy about his red nose, the way he imitates Beo's smile, the way he gets annoyed at Beo finding his hidden treasure—all while still being secretly generous. Giving Beo half of his stolen jerky after the goodbye scene was unexpectedly sweet. Buggy's character often gets played for laughs, but here there's a hint of his softer side. Also, him slacking off during training by hiding behind the mast is totally something young Buggy would do. He's not the ambitious type, which contrasts nicely with Shanks and Beo. The dynamic of the three cadets feels balanced: Shanks the stoic, Buggy the comedic, Beo the clever one.
The elopement backstory is messy but in a good way. Shen Jingyu seems like a total idiot—shouting names and threatening people while tied up? Real smooth, buddy. No wonder she ended up with Murong Shen later. But I'm curious if this version of events will change things. The author is setting up a lot of potential for her to make different choices this time around.
