The character of Du Yu is a great 'everyman' protagonist. He's not special, not brave, and not particularly ambitious. He just wanted to live a normal life, and he failed even at that. His decision to take the dangerous deal isn't made from courage, but from a realistic calculation: "I can't wait 700 years." He's self-aware enough to know he's never fought for anything. That makes his choice feel genuine. He's a passive person forced into an active role by circumstance. I'm curious to see if this dangerous mission will change his core personality or just force him to keep making hard choices.
I'm bracing myself for some ugly crying later. The combination of a potential pregnancy, an impending divorce, losing the child she raised, and watching her husband openly love another woman is just a freight train of sadness coming straight for Shen Qing Shu. I know there are going to be moments where she completely breaks down, and I'm both dreading it and looking forward to it because that catharsis is part of the reading experience. The author has set the emotional stage perfectly.
The Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady Records being a full-fledged mystical inheritance feels way more organic than just getting a random skill book. The way it’s tied to the Yellow Emperor mythos and the idea of "heavenly mandate" adds real weight. Plus, the instant comprehension mechanic actually makes sense for a divine artifact. I also like that it’s not just combat power—it covers strategy, divination, formations.
Qin Feng's character arc is already drawing me in. He starts off with that heavy sigh under the night sky, and you can really feel the weight of his situation. He's not instantly overpowered, which I appreciate. He's just a servant stuck in a grim world, and that makes his desperation to get the Heaven Rewards Diligence entry and learn the Fierce Tiger Fist feel earned. His decision to prioritize martial arts over useless studying felt authentic for his situation. I'm just a little concerned that his predecessor being scared to death by the Drummer makes the current Qin Feng seem almost too calm and collected for a guy who just woke up in a death world. But I'll give it a pass, maybe the system gave him some early confidence.
