Overall, this first chapter is a masterclass in setting up a web novel. It hooks you with a funny premise, introduces charming characters, builds a fascinating world through comedy, and sets up a deep, ancient mystery. The prose is clean and funny. The pacing is relentless. The character voices are distinct. It feels like the start of a very long, very fun ride. It understands its genre perfectly: it’s comedic, it’s fast, it’s full of potential for adventure, and it leaves you wanting more. I’m definitely adding this to my reading list. The voice is just so fresh and unique.
The scene where Shi Feizhe searches Liu San’s body and finds the Four Directions Gang tattoo is a great moment of consequence. He’s not just a hero who kills and forgets; he immediately understands the implications for his safety. The pragmatic decision to loot the corpse (silver, dry food) also shows he’s adapting quickly to the lawless world around him.
I liked the moment when Ouyang Yanbo uses Wind Cloud magic, described as having a green hue and being so precise. It’s a subtle but effective way to show his skill level. The crowd’s gasp and the reaction to a Spiritual Master—that hints at how rare high-level mages are. It makes the world’s power scale feel real and impressive.
The final scene with Si Yuchuan driving away, saying "Banyue, rest in peace" – the irony is that she's very much alive and now with Ye Shi. The way he accepts her death so quickly after feeling guilty? It's both tragic and pathetic. He had his chance and blew it. Meanwhile, Ye Shi is literally risking everything to save her. The contrast is stark and makes the upcoming reunion (if it happens) all the more anticipated.
