I wish the story had shown the mother performing some actual cultivation technique. Her power is only implied through others' fear, reputation, and money. The closest we get is "the air turned cold" and "killing intent" – which are aura-based powers common in cultivation novels. But she never uses a spell, technique, or physical enhancement. I want to see her in action.
2 I have a theory that the murmurs are from an ancient civilization that used sacrifices to survive. The temple and the beast skin might be a skill or a curse. The “special talent” might be a vessel for them. That could lead to a conflict between her will and theirs. Hope the story explores that.
I was absolutely gutted when Xie Yuqing died, especially by the hand of someone she trusted so completely. The whole buildup, her sacrificing herself for her siblings, the relief when she thought she was saved, and then that knife to the heart. It felt manipulative, even for a novel. I couldn’t get over how she literally jumped out of a moving carriage to be a diversion, but her real danger wasn’t from the soldiers—it was from the man on the horse. That betrayal scene is seared into my memory now. The way he kissed her as she died made my skin crawl, and not in a romantic way. It felt like the ultimate violation, like he was using intimacy as a weapon. This is the kind of plot twist that makes you want to reread the earlier chapters just to look for clues you missed, but honestly, I’m too angry to do that. I need to know what happens to her next.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this story because the premise sounded a bit silly—a Taoist nun working at a funeral home? But after reading this, I'm totally hooked. That part where Jiang Nanyu gets her hot pot ruined by a ghost and then just casually grabs it and shoves its head in the broth? I laughed out loud. She's so nonchalant about all the creepy stuff, it's refreshing. And she even scolds the ghost for spoiling her show! That's exactly how I'd react if someone spoiled a mystery for me.
