The Tibetan Mastiff named "Bamboo Horse" is such a cute detail. Like, 'Bamboo Horse' as in 'childhood sweethearts'? That is either unintentionally ironic or a brilliant naming choice. The dog represents their forced closeness, and it literally pins her down. So symbolic.
1 The scene where she carries her mother through the alley and covers her mouth to hide from the Hu patrol was tense. I could almost hear the footsteps. The story does a good job building suspense with sound—cries, laughter, footsteps—without relying on cheap jump scares.
I like how the story takes a moment to show Zhang Shuai’s life is actually pretty bleak. He’s got no diploma, no savings, no car, no house, no girlfriend. He borrowed money to get a fake electrician’s license. His only skill is being Wang Qiang’s helper. That survival-level desperation makes the electric shock accident feel like a real turning point. He’s not a loser who suddenly becomes cool; he’s a guy who almost died and has nothing to show for his life. That hits harder than any hero’s journey start.
1 The entire "take the fall" situation for the power cut is such a classic sibling move, even if they're not blood-related. Ji Huailuo messes up and blames her, and she just *takes it* to keep the peace? That's so frustrating! It makes me want her to stand up for herself more. But it also shows her intelligence in choosing her battles. She knows a full-on war with Ji Huailuo isn't worth it, especially when she's moving out soon.
I’m feeling a lot of second-hand embarrassment for Shen Wangchuan. His whole “stay away from my sister” speech was so cringey and over-the-top. Dude, you just met her. You don’t know her at all. I feel like the author did a great job making him look both protective and utterly foolish at the same time. It’s a testament to good writing when a character can frustrate you that much.
The whole “original owner fainted from exhaustion because of her mother-in-law” setup is such a classic, but the execution here actually made me angry on the protagonist’s behalf. The mother-in-law, Xu Huizhen, is so obviously playing favorites. The eldest and second daughters-in-law don’t even have to do morning greetings? But this poor pregnant woman has to? And after she fainted? The hypocrisy is insane. I wanted to throw something at the old lady.
