The pacing in these chapters is electric. It jumps from the heartbreak of the extraction, to the rage of the accusations, to the thrill of the self-destruction, and then the mystery of the new inheritance. There's no downtime. It just keeps piling on the emotional beats, which is perfect for an introduction. You're thrown into her despair, her fury, and her hope in rapid succession. It's a wild ride but super engaging.
I’m torn between feeling bad for Eliana and laughing at her situation. She just wanted to attend a magical academy as a commoner and maybe romance some princes, and instead she gets kidnapped by a muscle-fanatic duke’s daughter who forces her to do push-ups and drinks “for beginners” that look like swamp water. Her scream of pure terror when she sees the protein was perfect.
I was surprised by how much depth the goblins had as characters. They're not just mindless monsters; they have a social structure, warriors, females, elders, and even a sense of sympathy. When they assume the protagonist was abandoned by her family and feel sorry for her, it's a weirdly touching moment. It makes killing them feel more complex, even if they are cannibals.
The minor characters like the second aunt and the unnamed waiters add detail to the world. They serve their roles without overstaying. The second aunt only mentioned on the phone, but she sets up the plot. This efficiency in character use is effective.
I could go for a bit more action or external conflict early on. So far it’s mostly internal struggles and illness management. But the mystery of Shen Lian’s rebirth keeps me hooked.
The moment when Luo Jingqian gives her his jade pendant as collateral for the debt is loaded with symbolism. She doesn’t trust him, so he puts something valuable on the line. It shifts their relationship from savior and saved to something more like wary business partners.
The other jailers going berserk after seeing their companion die adds a nice layer to monster behavior. They're not mindless automatons; they have connections. And then Su Hong just spams stabs through the iron gate, farming armor pieces - that was almost comedic. The grinding game mentality really shows.
