The chase sequence had good moment-to-moment tension. Lin Yu controlling the bead, dodging, changing direction. Hongjun using his devouring ability that slows the bead but doesn't swallow it. The detail that the bead only slowed but wasn't sucked in shows its special nature. Also, when Lin Yu sees the space rift and the earthworm burrows out, I felt that surprise. The world building of how demon gods can use space rifts to travel is imaginative.
I really love the dorm room setup. Ya Ya is this super cheerful, sunny roommate who has a pet duck that she forces into a desk drawer, and she immediately gives Rui Bu Si the nickname "Xiao Luo Bu." The fact that she complains about not having a reduplicated name like everyone else is such a funny narcissistic concern for someone who is supposedly an ancient being. The duck pecking her head and the roommate's dazzling smile are so disarming. It's a great contrast to her paranoid, spy-like inner world. You can already tell Ya Ya is going to be a great "normal" friend who grounds her.
The writing does a fantastic job crafting the tiny details of infant life, from the difficulty of moving limbs to the desperate need for food. It turns what could be a boring segment into a surprisingly tense survival grind. The way she punches herself by accident or gets her clothes tangled are silly moments, but they ground the story. I felt her frustration and exhaustion from just rolling over or crying, which made the bond with Martha and the quiet visits from Sebas feel like earned reprieves.
The mother leaving with all the dowry staff feels like a setup for future conflict. Either she comes back with a demand, or Owen has to deal with the fallout of being abandoned. The fact that she took the butler and maids but left her son? Cold. Makes you wonder what kind of relationship they had before the transmigration.
