I literally screamed when the opening scene hit me with the hanged woman opening her eyes. That’s how you hook a reader, no slow burn, just straight into the chaos. I was like oh crap she’s actually dead and then bam, she’s back and struggling with the white silk. The panic felt so real, I could almost feel my own throat closing up. The instant flood of memories was a bit info-dumpy but I didn’t even care because the tension was so high. Definitely a strong start that makes you want to keep reading.
The author actually tries to give Li Chengqi a bit of dialogue where he begs for his life and promises evidence. It feels real. Like, in a life-or-death situation, anyone would try to bargain. But Jiang Chen wasn't buying it. "I never intended to let Li Chengqi go from the beginning." Savage.
The dinner scene where Wang Xuan asks Lu Yao to buy fatty meat is a small but nice character beat. He understands nutrition and building strength. It shows he has modern knowledge and discipline, not just relying on the cheat.
Zhou Wan'er deciding to follow him secretly because she "can't just sit idly by" shows hidden kindness. And Gu Zijian noticing her movements – that sparks future intrigue. These little hints of their true natures are well woven.
The whole arranged marriage thing is giving me mixed feelings. On one hand, it's a classic trope that's usually all drama and no logic. But the way it's set up here feels… different. Feng Wanming clearly has this deep bond with Jiang Hao's dad, and the military medal and photo bring that history to life. You can see the weight of that promise. It's not just a plot device; it's a real burden for him. And Jiang Hao himself seems mature about it, not jumping at the chance to claim a rich family's daughter. That alone makes him more interesting than just another martial arts hero.
The emotional core of this section is Mother Ning's guilt. Her line about dreaming that her daughter suffered and she did nothing is heartbreaking. It sets up a strong motivation for her to change, and it makes you feel for her past weakness.
