Can we talk about how hilarious the suicide attempt scene is? Honglian is all dramatic wanting to strangle her mistress and then go to the afterlife together, and Su Nuannuan is just like "FOOD. I WANT FOOD." The contrast between the melodrama and the practical foodie energy is everything.
The old Tree of Life giving Lin Yi that seed felt like a symbolic passing of the torch, but I couldn’t help wondering—was it really that easy? I mean, the tree is supposed to be ancient and wise, but it just hands over its legacy without any tests? I get the narrative convenience, but it almost felt too smooth. Still, the moment was touching, especially with the tree withering away. That part got me a bit emotional, not gonna lie.
The prose has a slightly formal, almost literary feel—phrases like “it was a day too boring to be called ordinary” and “I cannot completely deny the possibility that I am an apple tree.” It gives the narrator a dry, witty voice. The translation seems to preserve a Japanese light-novel rhythm with short paragraphs and lots of ellipses.
Song Yubi's descent from entitled to desperate is satisfying to watch. When she threatens Lu Zheng about deleting her, you can almost hear her voice crack. She's so used to getting what she wants from men that she can't process rejection. Her betrayal when the food runs out is totally predictable but still juicy.
