Cheng Jingchuan is the male protagonist and Shu Yue's husband. He is a soldier serving in the military. While visiting home on leave, he heard Shu Yue's cries for help and rescued her from drowning and from Li Lao San's assault. However, Shu Yue publicly demanded that he marry her, putting him in a difficult position. Under pressure from the village chief and to avoid scandal, he reluctantly agreed. He resents being tricked into the marriage and rarely returns home, spending most of his time at the military unit. He sends a monthly salary home, but his parents intercept the money meant for Shu Yue and their child. He is portrayed as a dutiful son but is distant and cold towards his wife, though he is a decent man at heart.
