Giles is Karl’s uncle, a portly man with small eyes and a greedy, stingy nature. He arrives after Karl’s father’s death to discuss marriage between Karl and his daughter Yvonne, but quickly loses interest when he learns Karl cannot inherit the title without money. He then proposes to buy the baron title from Karl for forty gold coins, planning to have Karl marry Yvonne and then transfer the title to herself. He becomes agitated when Karl refuses and leaves in a huff.
