Grand Scholar Zhang Yu is a senior official in the court, a member of the Wen Yuan Pavilion. He is an old and conservative man, initially opposed to the princess's divorce, arguing that women cannot divorce their husbands based on etiquette and ancestral rules. He is quickly silenced by the emperor's fierce retort. He later learns of the emperor's hidden intelligence network and fears the emperor's methods. He is one of the three ministers involved in investigating collusion with corrupt officials.
