Granny Liu is Ya Ya’s guardian, an elderly woman who lives in a rundown earthen house. She is weak, feverish, and close to death due to salt deficiency. When Ya Ya returns with the braised egg, Granny Liu is revived by the salty taste. She shows deep love and concern for Ya Ya, worries about her safety when she travels to the strange places, and supports the village chief’s decision to keep Ya Ya’s ability secret. She is present when the village kneels to thank Ya Ya.
