Zhao Hu, also called Uncle Zhao or Zhao the Hunter, is the only strong young man in the village. He goes up the mountain to hunt and dig for wild vegetables. After tasting the salted water, he regains strength and manages to find kudzu root. He is present at the secret meeting with the village chief and other men. He is grateful to Ya Ya and, like the others, kneels to thank her.
