Mother Ning is the wife of Ning Yanting and mother of Ning Nuan and Ning Lang. She is traditionally meek and submissive, always yielding to the demands of the Old Madam and the other branches. However, after a vivid nightmare about her daughter's miserable future, she undergoes a dramatic change, becoming assertive and willing to confront injustices. She stands up to the Second Miss and Second Madam, retrieves jewelry she previously gave away, and threatens to protect her daughter's reputation. She also begins to discipline her son Ning Lang more strictly. Her transformation surprises the whole household.
