Shen Zhou is a twelve-year-old orphan boy rescued by border soldiers. He lives in the courtyard with other orphans and becomes attached to Wen Wan. He guides her around the town, advises her on how to please “junior lieutenant” (Shen Yu), and is protective of her. He looks up to Wen Wan as a sister and hopes to join the army.
