Shu Yue's maternal grandfather is a doctor who, along with his wife, raised Shu Yue after her mother's death. He taught Shu Yue medical knowledge from his books. The family was targeted politically and eventually sent down. Before that, he and his wife, along with their sons, arranged for Shu Yue to go to the countryside to protect her, giving her a portion of the family's savings.
