Wang Xuan wakes to find himself in a dilapidated thatched hut, his head throbbing with unfamiliar memories. He has transmigrated into a world where demons stalk the land and martial artists wield godlike power, a world where human life is cheap. His new body belongs to a frail eighteen‑year‑old hunter named Wang Xuan, called Stones, from Shishan Village on the border of the Great Yuan Dynasty. Months earlier, his father and elder brother were killed by a demon while hunting, leaving only him and his elder brother’s fiancée, Lu Yao. Without a breadwinner, the family has fallen into abject poverty.

Wang Xuan learns that Lu Yao, to buy medicine for him after he was knocked unconscious by a bear, borrowed two taels of silver from a local wealthy man, Zhou Laifu – known as Zhou the Skinflint. The loan must be repaid in three days, or she must become his concubine. Zhou the Skinflint is infamous for his cruelty and his lust for married women; no woman he takes ever leaves his mansion alive. Worse, the annual taxes are due within half a month, totaling seven taels of silver – a sum far beyond their means. Lu Yao has only fifty or so cash left in the house. Wang Xuan understands that unless he finds a way to earn money quickly, his sister‑in‑law will be forced into a fate worse than death.

Just as despair settles in, Wang Xuan discovers a strange power: a deep red data panel appears before his eyes. It displays his attributes and skills, and he realizes it is the cheat device he designed in his previous life. By focused practice, he can gain experience, improve his skills, and earn attribute points to strengthen his body. The panel shows his basic archery, trapping, and tracking skills, along with his meager physical power of seventy kilograms. Overjoyed, Wang Xuan begins to train obsessively.

He practices archery behind his house, drawing the bow with all his might. At first his shots are wild, but soon he learns that only wholehearted, concentrated efforts grant experience points. After half an hour of intense practice, his body aches but his skill’s progress jumps from the entry level toward small accomplishment. That evening, after eating a meal with fatty meat to regain strength, he continues training into the night. The effort pays off. His basic archery breaks through to small accomplishment, granting him an attribute point and two powerful effects: Hundred Percent Accuracy within a hundred meters, and Twice the Result with Half the Effort – a doubled learning state in three seconds. His physical power increases from seventy to a hundred ten kilograms. His body, once frail and sickly, becomes sturdy and strong. With these enhancements, his later practice sessions yield three times the experience, and his archery progresses rapidly toward great accomplishment.

Determined to settle the debt, Wang Xuan decides to hunt in the Black Wind Mountain behind the village. Despite Lu Yao’s worries, he sets out the next morning with his hunting bow, thirteen arrows, and a hunting knife. On the periphery of the mountain, he moves cautiously, setting traps and reading animal tracks. As he searches, he accidentally learns the tracking skill and makes swift progress. He discovers a wild rabbit through its footprints and fresh scat, and with Hundred Percent Accuracy he kills it with a single arrow. The first prey in hand, he continues hunting, catching two more rabbits, two wild chickens, and several squirrels. His skills improve further, with basic trapping and tracking breaking into new levels. The tracking skill’s progress unlocks an additional effect: Insightful Perception, allowing him to discard his own aura and perceive any movement within fifty meters.

By late afternoon, Wang Xuan has a good haul of small game, enough to sell for several hundred cash – still far from the three taels and six cents he needs to repay Zhou the Skinflint, let alone the seven taels of taxes. He knows that the larger prey, such as wild boar or bear, dwell deeper in the mountain, but that territory also hides man‑eating demons. With his current power and skills, venturing deeper would be risky. Nevertheless, he resolves to return home, rest, and train his archery to great accomplishment that night. The next day he will push into the depths of Black Wind Mountain, trusting that the cheat panel and his growing abilities will allow him to bring back something truly valuable. He carries his game toward Baiyun Town, determined to survive and protect his sister‑in‑law from Zhou the Skinflint and the crushing burden of imperial taxes.

After finishing this part, I’m definitely invested in two questions: Can Wang Xuan get enough money in two more days? And what will happen to Lu Yao if he fails? The deadline creates immediate tension, and I want to read the next chapter now.

The overall tone is serious but not hopeless. Wang Xuan’s cautious optimism and the system’s clear progression give a sense that things can improve. That balance keeps me reading.

The village life depiction—mud houses, thatched roofs, starvation, desperation—feels authentic. It grounds the story in a harsh reality that makes the fantasy elements more impactful.

I noticed a small inconsistency: when Wang Xuan first practices archery, he goes from 77/200 to 141/200 in half an hour, then later 189/400. That’s a lot of progress. But given the “Twice the Result” effect and the difficulty scaling, I can accept it.

The skill acquisition via practice is well done. Wang Xuan learns “Tracking” simply by paying attention while hunting. It feels natural within the game system. I hope we see more skill learning like this.

The description of Lu Yao’s figure (curvy, “two large rabbits” under her clothes) is a bit on-the-nose and could be seen as oversexualizing her. But it’s common in this genre, and it does establish her beauty as a plot point (Zhou’s desire).
