The concept of converting Merit Power into Spiritual Power is a nice twist on typical cultivation novels where you just meditate. It gives a moral dimension to power growth. But I wonder if that means Wu Yin has to constantly do good deeds to recover her strength. Could that lead to her becoming a wandering hero type? Or will she eventually unlock her original power? Either way, it’s an interesting hook.
You can tell this is a light novel translation. The grammar is solid but the rhythm is a bit translated. 'Danna-sama' and 'Ojou-sama' are kept in. It doesn't bother me personally, but it's a specific flavor of writing. The strong personality of the MC manages to punch through any language barrier clumsiness.
The relationship dynamic feels very one-sided in terms of language. Liang He does all the talking while Cedric only growls and purrs. Yet somehow the communication feels complete. The author does a great job of conveying meaning through animal sounds and physical reactions. It reminds me of how actual pet owners talk to their animals knowing they understand the tone even if not the words.
The worldbuilding is actually pretty cool. Starfield and Apocalypse both have that “females are rare” thing going on, but the apocalypse version feels grittier with zombies and beastmen who go into heat. The Divine Mechanism Algorithm assigning husbands is creepy but also kind of funny. Imagine being assigned four dudes who all hate you. That’s rough, buddy.
The physicality of the labor is so present in the writing. The sweat, the dust, the heat, the muscle burn from carrying water. The author never lets you forget that this world runs on raw physical strength. Chun Tao works like an animal day in and day out, and she is still barely surviving. It makes the physical relief of a good harvest feel incredibly earned.
Okay, the hotpot scene is the highlight of this excerpt. That description of the beef tallow melting and chili peppers sizzling made me so hungry. I could practically smell it. And the way Shen Wan deliberately cracks the window to taunt everyone outside is so petty and fantastic. The electric shock defense was overkill but funny. I live for the moment she offers to sell a bowl for 500 taels. This woman knows how to troll.
