2 The scene where Chen Jinyue kicks the fake antiques and discovers the door ornament was handled well. It would've been easy to make her accidentally activate the portal dramatically, but instead it's just there, small and overlooked. Good use of Chekhov's gun. I'm betting that door ornament is important later.
I really love how the opening scene grabs you right away. That phone call at work, the way she just bolts out without even thinking — it feels so raw and real. You can feel the panic in her chest. The detail about her uniform with the frilled apron and the heels hurting her feet is such a small thing but it makes the whole dash feel more urgent. I was half expecting her to trip or something. Also that taxi driver who told her to pay later and even gave her a warm milk tea later — that little kindness hit me hard. It sets up this world where even in the worst moments, there are decent people. But then the God stuff starts and honestly I’m not sure how I feel about the tonal shift yet. It went from a very grounded emotional crisis to straight up fantasy real fast.
The fight scene where Rong Yan kicks Liu Er’s ass is surprisingly well-paced. Usually, authors drag these moments out with a ton of internal monologue, but here she just acts. The descriptions of her targeting pain points and using her professional Sanda training feels grounded and not over-the-top—she’s not suddenly a martial arts master with chi blasts, which is refreshing. However, I do wonder about the physical believability of a modern-day champion inhabiting a starved, fragile 70s village girl’s body and still landing kicks that hard. I’ll let it slide because the wish-fulfillment is strong here, but a tiny part of me wanted a line about her feeling the strain or compensating for the weaker body.
The worldbuilding here is low-key brilliant. The idea of SSS-level Beastmen entering an Evolution Period where they become actual ferocious beasts and need special protection zones is a fresh twist on were-creatures. It’s not a curse but a biological phase, almost like metamorphosis, which adds a really interesting sci-fi layer. The fact that they hold high positions in the Federation makes the stakes feel real and immediate.
I think this story has good re-read value because of the political layers. Knowing the dream details from the start makes her interactions with characters like the Empress Dowager more interesting on a re-read
The world’s logic around spirit bodies and ranks is interesting. E-rank to SSS-rank, with tamers being rare. The school system suggests she’ll get training and eventually form a team. The whole ‘canter to multiple beastmen’ model hints at a harem setup, but I hope it’s handled with actual relationships and not just fanservice. The characters introduced so far have distinct personalities.
The opening scene is wild—waking up under some half-naked purple-eyed guy who’s clearly in heat? That’s one way to grab attention. I was like, what did I just walk into? The whole “axe to break the lock” bit made me laugh though, because the original host must’ve been a total menace. It’s so over-the-top dramatic, but honestly, I’m hooked. I need to know how this disaster unfolds.
