Chu Qiu is the male protagonist of the story. He is a student in Class 9-8, which is described as a "desert of knowledge". He does not enjoy studying, preferring to daydream about awakening as a summoner. His personality is humorous and unrestrained; he often makes sarcastic remarks and sees through the absurdity of life. Physically, he is not particularly handsome but gives a feeling of a gentleman warm as jade. During a lecture by Mentor Xiao Ya, he falls into a trance and is transported to Yama Hall, where he meets King Yama and receives the Book of Life and Death. He undergoes a test fighting the guardian beast Diting and successfully tames it. At the Awakening Ceremony, his awakening triggers a spectacular celestial phenomenon but the Awakening Stone shatters, leading others to believe he failed. However, he actually forms a contract space with Diting. He remains calm amid mockery, especially from his rival Chen Che. After the ceremony, his friend Xia Mo comforts him with playful gestures.
