Du Yu is a 26-year-old Han Chinese man who works as an employee in a state-owned enterprise workshop. He dies when a moving truck crashes into the bus he is on, killing him instantly while all other passengers remain unharmed. After death, he becomes a floating soul and is picked up by two underworld officials, Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo, who transport him to the underworld in a dilapidated minivan. In the underworld, he meets the Great Judge Cui Jue, who determines that his death was a wrongful death caused by a Tai Shu (an anomaly in spacetime). Cui Jue offers him a choice: wait 726 years for reincarnation as a rich second-generation, or take on a dangerous mission to fix a legendary story in exchange for faster reincarnation. Du Yu chooses the mission and is sent into the legend of Yi Shoots Nine Suns as the operator for the Legend Management Bureau. He is described as having a cautious personality and a sense of humor, but he becomes determined when facing the impossible task of helping a mortal shoot down nine suns.
