The skill book Jiang Songhua gave is Fine Grade, which is basically the lowest common summon. But then it evolves to Epic, which means the teacher accidentally gave a treasure. That’s a nice bit of karma for the MC. Makes the kind act even more meaningful in hindsight.
I'm desperate to know what's outside the village. The locust plague in Dongxiang Village is the only clue. Is it a typical cultivation world, or something weirder? The fact that the outside is in "turmoil" and "Dongxiang" was "hit" suggests things are much worse out there, making the village a bitter prison.
The psychological test is a great way to show Lin Chen's skills without a flashback. We don't need to be told he's a top-tier assassin; we see him figure out the room's purpose and find a loophole (spacing out). It's "show, don't tell" at its finest.
The way Wu Sisi handles the family by luring the monster is cold and calculating. She doesn’t even flinch when Liu Ying’s head gets torn off. That’s dark, but it makes total sense in this world. She’s been starved and abused, and survival comes first. I like that the author didn’t try to make her morally pure. She’s not a hero, she’s just someone who refuses to be a victim.
The character of Ruyi is a perfect foil. She’s cheerful, loyal, and a little naive. Her reaction when Wen Jiayue says “I want to be alone” or “Ruyi will always be with madam and miss” shows she’s a sweetheart. I’m already worried about her fate because the story hinted she died in a past life. I hope the author gives her a better fate this time. If she dies again, I might rage quit. But the fact that I care so much means the character is well-written.
I love Huihui’s personality – she’s just so relentlessly cheerful and trusting. Even after being lied to about the “opportunity,” she gets mad but then immediately clings to Xiao Qing. Her line “Huihui is the smartest in heaven and earth” while being completely fooled is hilarious. She’s the perfect mix of wise and naive.
