Zhou Peiyu's character arc is interesting even though it's early. He starts as someone just trying to survive financially, no ambition, no drama. But he's forced into these situations by circumstance. His decision to help Zhu Jiajia wasn't heroic, it was just him not wanting to see someone die. And now he's the only one with immunity. I'm excited to see how this power dynamic plays out. Will he become a hero or will he run away.
I have a theory about the “item” in the brocade pouch. Since the traitor killed her for it with such urgency, it might be a seal, a map, a military deed, or a gift from a powerful ally. But the way Xie Yuqing was ready to jump off a cliff with it suggests it was a weapon that could change the war. Maybe a poison? Or a key to a weapon vault? In the new timeline, the doctor’s memory loss and strange paintings might be blocking the location or use of that item. The Zheng family’s sudden wealth and arrogance could be tied to finding it. I’m going to keep an eye on every mention of the “brocade pouch.” It feels like the main plot device that ties the two halves of the story together. I just hope it’s not a boring magical MacGuffin.
The twin dynamics are my favorite part of this book so far. Mu Fenghua is this tiny, fierce girl who doesn’t hesitate to punch her brother when he acts up, and the brother is this big, greedy bear who gets scared into obedience. The scene where she kicks him aside while absorbing spiritual energy and later pats his head then kicks him again to calm him down is hilarious. I can already tell the brother will become this loyal, slightly scared sidekick as they grow up. Their bond feels real despite the violence—she’s protecting him in her own twisted way.
I'm really curious about the reincarnation queue system. A 726-year wait is insane! It makes the entire mythology of the underworld feel incredibly populated and backlogged. It also perfectly explains why ghosts might become angry or vengeful. If you had to hang around for centuries just to be reborn, you'd be pretty grumpy, too. It makes the offer of reincarnation seem less like a gift and more like a golden ticket. It also makes me wonder about the state of the human world seven centuries from now. Will it even be worth going back to? That thought adds a layer of existential dread to the comedy.
The "Ting Head" reward is a great political move. Jiang Ming isn’t just a random strong guy; he’s now an official with authority over the village. That gives him leverage against the Chen family. It’s a classic power play. The fact that the gold reward wasn't fully paid is also a great twist. It shows that the government is broke and unreliable. It forces Jiang Ming to be creative with his resources (the hidden bear parts) and to rely on his new local power. This is smart world-building. The reward is a double-edged sword, and I like seeing the MC navigate that.
The police scene at the end of the first chapter builds suspense nicely. The fact that she disappears just before they check the trash can adds a layer of mystery. Is the sachet actively protecting her from being discovered? That adds a nice deus ex machina potential, but I hope it’s not overused.
The ghost designs in this novel are legitimately disturbing. The pregnant woman with the doll in her belly speaking for her? The sewn-up mouth ripping open? The seven knives in the head guy? Each ghost has a unique backstory that ties into how they die, which makes the perfect kill method feel clever rather than random. The author clearly put thought into each monster.
The dialogue is sharp and natural. Wen Li's lines are quotable: "I told you to shut up." "Wherever I sleep, it sleeps." "Are you sure you're not a wife-killer?" Every line adds to her character. The author doesn't waste words.
The “Spoils I” skill being a novice gift pack that increases search chance by one is a nice subtle bonus. When he uses it on the two jackals, he gets complete hide and skeleton. That’s a much better result than just the teeth and bone spear from the original kill. It shows the skill is worth using, even if it consumes the corpse. I’m curious if higher levels give better loot.
