Olaf is the former Jarl of Gothenburg, a large, middle-aged man who loves strong drinks. He built a brewing workshop and forces his subjects to pay grain taxes annually. After Ragnar returns from a raid, Olaf reneges on their three-to-seven split and tries to kill Ragnar during a banquet. When Ragnar retaliates, Olaf dons chainmail and a Germanic helmet, leads a shield wall, and duels Ragnar. He nearly kills the exhausted Ragnar but is struck down by Vig, who throws a burning log and buries an axe in his skull. Olaf is greedy, treacherous, and ruthless, breaking his word and endangering guests.
