Ragnar is a legendary Viking warrior and sea king, about 36 years old, of common birth. He has led raids on Britain for 18 years and is renowned throughout Northern Europe. He is charismatic, martial, and generous, often sharing food and drink with strangers. When Lord Olaf cheats him over booty, Ragnar fights back and, with Vig's help, kills Olaf and becomes Jarl of Gothenburg. He values his followers and family, publicly praising his sons and comrades. He is invited by King Eric to lead a massive raid on Essex, but during the feast his wife Ragnheid is poisoned. Enraged, he joins Eric's campaign against Borg. A master of sword techniques, he is both powerful and cunning in battle, yet he also shows political shrewdness in consolidating his rule.
